Pirates Repulsed by Armed Guards

A few days ago, French soldiers stationed aboard two French tuna trawlers near the Seychelles fended off a pirate attack. Neither soldiers nor trawler crew were injured in the brief firefight. Other forces pursued the pirates and captured eleven of them. If your French is good, read the Le Figaro article here. Otherwise, read the Reuters story here. The Reuters article describes a subsequent, similar action as well, in which French troops drove off a second pirate attack.

In reality, if a pirate vessel can come close enough to board a modern commercial vessel, pirates can capture it. None of the current non-lethal methods, alone or in combination with others, can stop well-armed, determined, persistent, risk-taking attackers if they have enough time before armed naval response forces arrive.
